Club Rides

An iPhone app to keep track of your bicycling club’s activities!

The app keeps tracks of the total mileage of planned rides and performed rides. It maps the starting location of each ride and shows the elevation profile.

Tapping the calendar icon in the title bar will bring up a view allowing to jump to a specific week in the year to browse the ride schedule from that point.

Tapping one of the scheduled rides takes one to a detailed view showing further information for that ride such as distance, hilliness, who leads it and where it starts.

In this view (see image below) tapping on “Start:” will show you a map with the start location of the ride. Tapping on “Hilliness:” will show the elevation profile of the ride. Not all rides may have elevation profiles yet. As time goes by more and more will as we complete these rides with our GPS-enabled bike computers.

You can also browse through the full collection of your club’s collection of  rides by touching the Numbers tab in the bottom bar, or view them by distance or by town the ride starts in. And you can bring up a calendar view by tapping on the icon in the title bar to jump to a specific date in the schedule.

When tapping on a listed ride in the Schedule View, you’ll see further details for the ride (see 2nd image). In this view you can move the slider to indicate that you plan to do this ride (for future rides) and move the other slider if you did do the ride. Back in the Schedule view, scheduled rides will be listed green and performed rides listed blue.

Make it your own!

Club Rides comes preloaded with the schedule for the Rochester Bicycling Club but it can easily load and display your club’s schedule. Please see the handy customization guide! For example, browse the Western Wheelers schedule by entering “http://www.onno.com/cycling/club-rides/ww/” in the Preferences view!

Feedback welcome!

Please let me know what you think of the Club Rides iPhone app. I welcome your suggestions for improvement and enhancement, feedback and any other comments.

Development

Recently I wrote about my Objective-C and iPhone development experiences.

Some pointers:

GPX2ProfileImage

This Java application takes gpx files (generated by Garmin’s bicycle computers for example) and creates an elevation profile based on the latitude, longitude and latitude information in the file.

Visit the Community Forum for feedback, to report issues, request features, make suggestions.

Very handy for generating those profile images for the Club Rides application!!

When using GPX2ProfileImage for that purpose then enter the ride number in the dialog box after clicking the “Generate Club Rides profile”-button. GPX2ProfileImage will create both the small profile and the large profile as needed by Club Rides (“profile-large-number.gif” and “profile-small-number.gif” respectively). See the customization guide for more details.

It can also save your gpx files for Google Earth and you can print your elevation profiles as well.

You can download the Mac OS X binary or the zip file for other platforms like Windows and Linux.
